Holmes receives 2017 Healthcare Engineer of the Year Award

Rick Holmes, Director of Plant Services at Nash UNC Health Care, recently won the highest honor bestowed on healthcare engineers in North Carolina. The 2017 Engineer of the Year Award was presented by James Best, Secretary of the North Carolina Health Engineers Association (NCHEA) after a vote from the NCHEA healthcare engineering membership.

“This is a lifetime achievement and tremendous honor for Rick, and also a wonderful endorsement for our hospital,” said Brad Weisner, Chief Operating Officer with Nash UNC Health Care. “We are all delighted for Rick. He’s been with us for more than ten years and has worked tirelessly to make our facility one of the best in the state.”

In his position with the hospital, Holmes is responsible for planning, organizing, developing and directing the overall physical plant services within the hospital. This includes three primary areas; engineering and new construction, safety and security, and grounds keeping for all facilities. He is also responsible for compliance with current local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.

Holmes has extensive knowledge, education, and 35 years of practical experience. From his beginnings at age 18 as an apprentice electrician at Weirton Medical Center in West Virginia, he’s had a passion for excellence in healthcare. Since those early days he has grown to take key roles in healthcare engineering projects and plant services management in hospitals across this country.

Always in tune with quality and fiscal responsibility, Holmes has directed the successful completion of over 90 million dollars in construction projects on the Nash UNC Health Care’s campus, everything from the new 120,000-square-foot Emergency Department and Heart Center to complex, phased renovations on patient floors and the new Women’s Center.

In addition to his exemplary service to Nash UNC Health Care, he has given graciously of his time and energy to promote his profession, and to the citizens of Nash County. He worked five years on the Nash UNC Health Care Foundation Fundraising Committee and served as chairman in 2014. For two years, he coordinated the “Coats for Kids” program within the hospital. He has also served in local schools, reading to children every Friday for five years, as well as organizing Christmas parties and holiday gift donations for Williford Elementary School.
