UNC Cancer Care at Nash adds Dr. Jay Manikkam to Medical Oncology Staff
Jay Manikkam, MD, recently joined the medical oncology staff of UNC Cancer Care at Nash, located in the Danny Talbott Cancer Center on the Nash UNC Health Care Campus. Manikkam completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Abington Jefferson Health in Abington, PA and his fellowship in Hematology & Oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.
“Dr. Manikkam has a deep passion for community medicine, shows great compassion and support for his patients, and is a valuable addition to our cancer treatment team,” said Sterling Grimes, director of Cancer Services at Nash UNC Health Care. “He has a desire to treat the whole person, is always advocating for the patient, and meets them wherever they are in their fight against cancer.”
“As with many families, Dr. Manikkam’s own family experienced cancer firsthand when he lost his mother to breast cancer at the young age of 55. He now specializes in the treatment of breast cancer, as well as prostate and lung cancer. He also has extensive training in the management of lymphomas and blood disorders such as anemia, blood clots, and abnormal blood counts,” Grimes added.
Manikkam shared that he is very impressed with the new Danny Talbot Cancer Treatment Center.
“Having all aspects of cancer care – treatment, navigation, social work, genetic counseling, and clinical research – under one roof is a tremendous advantage. I am excited to be a part of world class cancer care here in this community, ensuring our patients get the same level of quality care as they would at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill.”
Dr. L. Lee Isley, president and CEO of Nash UNC Health Care, said, “Dr. Manikkam brings valuable knowledge of clinical research and clinical trials to our area, and in collaboration with UNC Medical Center, will benefit local patients with access to break-through cancer treatments.”
Dr. Manikkam enjoys gardening and travel. He and his wife, Karthika, a software architect, are expecting their first child in November.
