UNC Health Nash Campus Changes to Take Effect Due to Construction

UNC Health Nash is taking the next step in the construction process, bringing key updates to parking, traffic flow, and hospital access. Scheduled to begin on March 17, construction on the new hospital tower will require the temporary closure of the current Nash General Hospital tower’s main entrance, and the opening of a new temporary entrance for patients and visitors. An exact date for these changes will be shared closer to mid-March. There will be clear signage and parking attendants to assist drivers with the new traffic patterns.

How to Enter the Hospital Beginning March 17

Patients and visitors will enter the hospital through the lower level of the parking deck, which features a fully covered walkway leading directly to the new, temporary main entrance. This entrance will serve as the primary access point throughout the construction period, as well as the main patient drop-off and pick-up location.

Throughout construction, the new, temporary hospital lobby will serve as the main registration and patient check-in area for outpatient services such as X-rays and ultrasounds. Patients visiting Nash Day Hospital for outpatient procedures, including endoscopy and MRI, should continue to park in the Nash Day Hospital lot and check in at the Nash Day Hospital registration desk. Visitors coming to see hospitalized (inpatient) loved ones should use the new, temporary entrance.

Parking and Traffic Flow Updates Beginning March 17

During this transition, the patient drop-off and pick-up loop in front of the current hospital tower will be closed to the public, and new traffic patterns will direct vehicles to the new drop-off location in the lower-level deck. The upper level of the parking deck will be reserved for construction vehicles and equipment, while patient and visitor parking will move to the lower level of the deck, which will serve as the primary parking area for hospital guests. Hospital employees will relocate to newly designated parking areas to keep the lower level of the parking deck available exclusively for patients and visitors. A traffic guard will be stationed on-site to assist drivers with the new traffic pattern, updated parking areas, and ensure smooth traffic flow.

Parking for Nash Heart Center and Mayo Surgery patients and visitors will remain in the paved lot adjacent to the parking deck. To accommodate parking updates, a new parking lot across from the Nash Emergency Department will open in mid-March, designated for Emergency Department, Nash Heart Center, and Mayo Surgery patients, visitors, and staff.

UNC Health Nash is committed to minimizing disruptions while maintaining exceptional care during construction. Updated signage, maps, and wayfinding resources will be installed throughout the existing hospital tower and campus to assist patients and visitors.
