Nursing is often described as a calling—a blend of compassion, dedication, and resilience. UNC Health Nash Nursing Supervisor, Linda Gail Gregory, RN, embodies these qualities, and has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to patient care, mentorship, and community health. In 2024, her impactful contributions were honored in her recognition as one of the Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina, a testament to her professional excellence and profound influence in the profession.
Since its establishment in 1989, the Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina has honored nursing professionals across the state who exhibit exceptional skill and commitment to their craft. This prestigious accolade highlights not only the essential role of nurses, but also supports the future of nursing through scholarships.
With a robust career spanning over three decades, Gregory has served in a variety of roles, always with unwavering dedication. As the current House Supervisor at UNC Nash, she plays a crucial role in hospital operations, ensuring seamless workflows, addressing emergent challenges, and providing support to staff and patients alike. Her ability to lead with calmness and precision makes her a vital presence in times of urgency.
As the chair of the Nursing Supportive Committee, Gregory fosters a culture of trust among nursing assistants and clinical support staff. Under her guidance, team members feel valued and encouraged to make a meaningful impact on patient care.
"Gail empowers our staff to deliver exceptional outcomes with her empathetic and graceful leadership," said Tashanna Pulley, Executive Director of Inpatient Nursing. “She makes them feel heard, supported and cared for, all while building confidence through listening, teaching and anticipating their needs. Gail exudes a caring light that leaves a lasting impact on both staff and patients, all while demonstrating the highest standards of care. Her ability to elegantly blend care, dedication and leadership makes her a truly deserving recipient of the Great 100 Nurse Award.”
Gregory’s mentorship is particularly valued by novice nurses, who credit her with easing their transition into their roles and developing their critical thinking skills.
“Gail promotes the advancement of the nursing profession in a nurturing manner," said Courtney Ceaser, Executive Director of Clinical Coordination. “She is a trusted mentor, often sought out by nurses that look up to her for her advice. She’s frequently commended for soothing their fears.”
Her influence is felt throughout the UNC Nash community, where she is recognized for her dignity, integrity, and accountability. Whether supporting staff in stressful situations or ensuring patient safety, she leads by example.
“She radiates enthusiasm for the profession of nursing through her strong work ethic,” Ceaser continued. “She possesses an outgoing personality and constantly strives to make a difference in the lives of others. You can see how much she enjoys her role in everything she does.”
Beyond her clinical duties, Gregory’s compassion is displayed in her interactions and personal initiatives. Known for her “servant’s heart," she regularly goes above and beyond to assist her patients, their families, and her peers—whether by adjusting schedules to meet department needs, comforting families in difficult moments, or crafting fidget blankets for dementia patients, her kindness makes a difference.
“Without a second thought, she selflessly gives of herself to support our patients and community. Patients and families frequently express their gratitude for her kindness,” Ceaser shared.
Gregory's recognition among North Carolina’s Great 100 Nurses is not just a personal milestone, but a testament to the values she upholds—excellence, compassion, and service.
“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Gail for 27 years,” said Patricia Alford-Harrison, Nursing Assistant. “She is a true Nightingale nurse, embodying divine compassion and commitment. Her faith and dedication profoundly impact our community.”
Ashika Boulware, Nursing Assistant, echoed Alford-Harrison’s sentiment.
“Gail’s work ethic and empathy create a safe, caring environment for patients and colleagues alike. She collaborates seamlessly and earns the trust of everyone around her.”
When asked what drives her passion for healthcare, Gregory explained that she serves to embody the compassion she hopes for in the world, not for recognition.
“My motivation is simple: to treat others as I'd wish for my family and myself to be treated, with kindness and respect. I am sustained by the unwavering support of my family, mentors like Courtney Ceaser and Tashanna Pulley, and the many colleagues who've guided me along the way. From my start at Halifax to my current role at Nash, I am continually learning, driven by a philosophy of mutual growth and support among healthcare workers and patients alike. Being a nurse and a pastor’s wife allows me to nurture our community and encourage our team in profound ways. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to serve and learn every day.”
