Rely on trained, professional lactation consultants at Nash Women’s Center to help you learn how to breastfeed your baby. After delivery at UNC Health Nash, you’ll have access to our experts to talk about how to successfully start and maintain breastfeeding.

Find breastfeeding guidance and encouragement from our lactation consultants. As a new mother, you can request sessions with a specialist to focus on your personal needs or answer general questions about:

  • Breastfeeding how-to's, including positioning and latching techniques
  • Feeding cues from your baby
  • Caring for yourself while breastfeeding
  • Determining if your baby is getting enough milk
  • Maintaining a healthy milk supply
  • Breastfeeding tools and breast pump education
  • Storing breast milk (particularly for pre-term infants in the Special Care Nursery)
  • Avoiding common breastfeeding problems

Breastfeeding Class

Take our two-hour introductory session about breastfeeding. Count on our certified lactation consultants to share their expertise while teaching you basic techniques. Learn helpful tips you can use for a positive breastfeeding experience with your baby.

Breastfeeding Complications

When you face breastfeeding problems, count on the compassionate specialists at UNC Nash to help you find solutions. Ask our Lactation Consultants for help if you experience painful nursing, breast engorgement, or low milk production or if your baby isn’t gaining enough weight. If you experience breastfeeding challenges, or breastfeeding is not an option, donor breast milk is available to you as a safe and nourishing option to support your baby.

Support After You Go Home

Get ongoing breastfeeding support after you leave UNC Nash for as long as you need assistance. Our Outpatient Lactation Support team is always available to answer questions by phone or appointment. Call 252-962-FEED (3333) or email our lactation consultants for breastfeeding help.

Register for Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpartum Classes

Find support and resources to help you and your partner prepare for becoming parents. Attend childbirth, breastfeeding classes, and postpartum care classes. The Safety and Security of Your New Baby

Trust us to provide a safe, secure environment at the Nash Women’s Center for you and your baby. A four-band infant security system protects your baby at all times. We’ll match the bands on your newborn to you and your partner after any separations.
